Can Cold Weather Affect ADAS?
ADAS—advanced driver assistance systems—refers to numerous different safety features on your car. You might not have known this, but ADAS has a long history: things like anti-lock brakes (which have been around since the 1970s) are a type of ADAS!
Today, ADAS is even more sophisticated. It includes things like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, blind spot warnings, automatic emergency braking, automatic parking, and more. Most new cars offer at least a few of these features.
These newer ADAS systems work using a network of cameras and sensors placed strategically around your car. Like any other part on your car, it’s possible for them to malfunction—requiring calibration or replacement.
Can cold weather cause ADAS to stop working properly?

How Does Winter Affect ADAS?
There are a few ways that winter conditions—like freezing temperatures, snow, ice, fog, and sleet—can affect ADAS.
Reduced Visibility
The cameras and sensors of ADAS have some limitations. In order for ADAS to work properly, the sensors and cameras must have a clear view of the environment ahead.
Winter conditions can result in reduced visibility. ADAS can’t “see” quite as clearly in fog, sleet, or where the sun reflects off icy surfaces. Heavy snowfall can obscure lane markings, road signs, and other vehicles, which can negatively affect lane departure warnings, forward collision warnings, and adaptive cruise control. Snowdrifts can sometimes be mistaken for obstacles, leading to unnecessary automatic braking.
Slowed Response Time
In extremely cold temperatures, the electrical systems of the car can be affected—leading to delayed processing times. Radar systems, for example, can be less accurate in extreme cold.
Obstructed Cameras and Sensors
Snow, ice, and salt accumulation on your car can cover its cameras and sensors. When sensors and cameras are covered, they’re prevented from working entirely.
What Should You Do This Winter?
This winter, make sure to check your car and clear your sensors and cameras of snow, ice, and salt buildup. Pay extra attention to the front and rear bumpers, side mirrors, and windshield. (Those areas are where many sensors are placed.)
In addition, we always recommend that drivers take extra caution in the winter. All ADAS systems have limitations, so it’s important never to rely on ADAS to do everything for you. Even if you have blind spot alerts, for example, you should still check your blind spot before changing lanes. This helps you stay safe and avoid accidents on the road.
